Experienced Shreveport-Bossier City Personal Injury Attorneys Who Treat You Like Family

For more than 40 years, the law firm of Rice & Kendig has been helping people when they get hurt in a car or truck accident in Shreveport-Bossier City and throughout North Louisiana. We truly care about our clients and devote all our knowledge, skills and resources toward getting a great result every time. As a client of Rice & Kendig, you’ll be treated like family and know your case is being handled by a team who understands what you are going through and is committed to getting you the help and compensation you need and deserve. If you are looking for a law firm with the compassion to help you through this trying time and the dedication to achieve success, then you’ve found a home at Rice & Kendig.

Our law firm has over 40 years of experience handling personal injury and wrongful death cases in Shreveport-Bossier City and North Louisiana, including a great deal of jury trial experience. Your case may not go to trial; most cases don’t. But when insurance companies know they are up against a law firm that goes to trial and wins, they are more likely to settle out of court for a fair amount, without playing games or trying to lowball a settlement. After handling thousands of cases like yours, we know how much your case is worth and how to work toward getting the full value of your claim.

From your first consultation with Rice & Kendig, you’ll meet with your attorney personally, and that’s who you’ll get to represent you. You won’t have to worry about having your case handed off to a junior associate with lesser experience or a non-attorney case manager. Our Shreveport injury lawyers are here for you whenever you need us.

Call Rice & Kendig for help with any personal injury or wrongful death matter in Shreveport-Bossier City or North Louisiana. Below are just some of the firm’s main areas of practice.

About Rice & Kendig

We are personal injury lawyers located in Shreveport, Louisiana. Rice & Kendig have represented clients in Shreveport, Bossier City and throughout North Louisiana and East Texas for over 30 years. We are dedicated to serving our clients. We have built our careers on helping injured clients and their families make the best possible physical recovery and get financial results. When you call Rice & Kendig, you will speak with your lawyer from the first meeting and throughout your case. Every client matters at Rice & Kendig.

We are trial lawyers. Our lawyers have tried hundreds of cases to judgment and verdict, resulting in the recovery of millions of dollars on behalf of our clients, including many individual awards in excess of a million dollars each. Because of our willingness to go to trial, we have the respect of judges and the attorneys for the insurance companies. We have extensive experience and resources to help our clients obtain the best medical and mental health treatment. We have also worked with experts from all over the country to help tell the story of our cases.

We work on a contingency fee basis, which means that we get paid out of what we recover for you from settlement or judgment at the end of the case. We don’t get paid if we don’t recover for you. We also offer free consultations.

Rice & Kendig is a local firm. We live in this community and are committed to local causes. We have been privileged to partner with many local churches, schools and charities over the past 30-plus years.

Our firm has the largest reported jury verdict in Louisiana for Fibromyalgia, Kessler v. Southmark Corp., No. 25,941-CA (La. App. 2 Cir. 9/21/94); 643 So.2d 345; and at the time of judgment, the largest jury verdict for wrongful death, McGrail v. Lee, No. 35,756-CA (La. App. 2 Cir. 04/03/02); 814 So.2d 729.

Other significant cases include Perkins v. McDow, Nos. 92-C-2192 and 92-C-2709 (La. 02/22/93); 615 So.2d 312, reversal of “second permittee” rule by the Louisiana Supreme Court and Haynes v. Shumake, 582 So.2d 959 (La. App. 2 Cir. 06/19/91) which required uninsured motorist carriers to conduct their own investigation, rather than requiring the insured to furnish a never-ending list of proof.

Motor Vehicle Accidents

Getting your needs met after a car accident can be difficult, given Louisiana’s low auto insurance requirements, high rate of uninsured drivers, pure comparative fault laws, short statute of limitations, high jury trial threshold, no-pay no play law, and other unique features. Our lawyers have worked countless auto accidents and know how to build and present a strong case for full compensation. Our comprehensive motor vehicle accident practice includes 18-wheeler truck accidents, bicycle accidents, and pedestrian accidents. We represent people hit by drunk, uninsured or distracted drivers or injured in rideshare accidents with Uber or Lyft. From rear-end collisions to rollover accidents, T-bone crashes and tractor-trailer jackknife accidents, our lawyers possess the skills and experience needed to achieve successful results on your claim. Our firm takes on boating accidents and aviation accident claims as well.

Premises Liability

Property owners have a duty to keep their premises in a reasonable condition for the safety of their customers and guests. When there is a dangerous condition the owner or manager knew about or should have known about, but they failed to fix it, the premises owner can and should be held liable for the damages caused in a slip and fall or trip and fall injury. These cases are often difficult to prove, but our attorneys have had enough experience to know the proper steps to take after a slip and fall in a grocery store, restaurant, department store or city sidewalk. We additionally help dog bite victims recover compensation for the severe physical and psychological consequences of a vicious animal attack, and we likewise hold property owners liable for assaults that occur due to their negligent security on the premises.

Nursing Home Negligence

When we can no longer care for our parents, grandparents or others with special needs, we entrust their care to nursing homes and assisted living facilities. We expect these facilities to have qualified staff in sufficient numbers to attend to the physical and emotional needs of their residents. If abuse or neglect occurs, we step in swiftly to stop the misconduct, ensure your loved one is properly cared for, and work to hold nursing homes accountable for their errors while obtaining compensation for their victims.

Oilfield Injuries

Oilfield fires, explosions, blowouts and on-the-job injuries can be catastrophic. Accidents happen when oil companies don’t properly train or supervise workers, maintain their machinery, or give workers the proper equipment they need for their safety. We hold oil companies accountable to the people they harm when they fail to provide a safe environment.

Mass Torts

Our firm has the knowledge, skills, resources and determination to take on the largest corporations and the biggest cases when a company’s negligent behavior is responsible for injuries to thousands. We take on corporate giants like Monsanto or 3M when they put unsafe products on the market, and injuries follow.

Wrongful Death

In the most tragic cases, injury victims don’t survive the accident. Spouses, children, parents and grandparents are robbed of their loved ones through an untimely death that could have been prevented. The pain of these emotional scars is made even worse by the financial loss of the family breadwinner, household manager or invaluable caregiver. We put together a strong case, so surviving family members receive the compensation and financial help they need to cope with the hole in their lives left behind by another’s negligent behavior.

What is a Trial Lawyer?

Simply answered, a trial lawyer is a lawyer who will go to court for their clients. You might think all lawyers will go to court for their clients. The fact is, very few lawyers go to trial or are even trained to do so. Trial skills aren’t taught in law school. Trial skills are only learned by years of training under an experienced trial lawyer and going to trial.

Perhaps the best example of what you don’t want in a lawyer is depicted in the movie, “My Cousin Vinny.” Yes, Vinny finds a way to win in the end, but that’s Hollywood. The reality is you don’t want an unseasoned and untrained lawyer handling your case.

Most lawyers, including the lawyers you see on billboards and television, do not go to trial for their clients and are not trial attorneys. In many cases, the lawyer you see on a billboard is simply someone marketing to clients. The marketing lawyers take a fee and refer your case to a trial lawyer. You may never meet with the billboard lawyer. When you schedule a consultation with Rice & Kendig, you will meet with Bill Kendig or Marshall Rice, who are both trial lawyers.

Mr. Rice & Mr. Kendig have tried over 1000 cases to judges and juries in both state and federal court. We have also argued cases in the courts of appeal and the Louisiana Supreme Court. When you hire Rice & Kendig, you get experienced trial attorneys who are trained and willing to go to trial for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Q: How will I pay your fee and how much will it cost to have an initial consultation?

A: We offer a free initial consultation to evaluate and determine if we can help you under the facts and circumstances of your claim. We work on a contingency fee basis, which means you pay us nothing if we do not make recovery for you.

  • Q: Can I afford to hire an attorney?

A: Yes. We handle personal injury cases are on a contingency fee basis. We are paid a percentage of the settlement or judgment at the end of the case. This means that we do not require payment until your case settles or you receive a final judgment from the court. To put it simply, you pay us nothing if we do not make recovery for you.

  • Q: Should I negotiate or speak with an insurance adjuster before hiring an attorney?

A: No. Insurance adjusters are professionals, trained to save the insurance company money and minimize your claim. Before speaking to an insurance claim adjuster call an attorney and make sure you know your rights.  Since we offer a free consultation, you risk nothing speaking with us first.

  • Q: How much is my case worth?

A: A true estimate of your case worth cannot be determined until you have finished medical treatment or maximized your recovery. The value of your claim will be based on the following factors: Past and future medical expenses, past and future pain and suffering, mental anguish and loss of enjoyment of life, lost wages and future lost earning capacity, disfigurement, disability, loss of consortium as well as the nature, extent and duration of your injuries.  Rice & Kendig has evaluated cases for settlement and tried cases to judgment and verdict for over 30 years. We will bring that experience to the table when it comes time to evaluate your case. Our only job is to maximize your recovery.

  • Q: Can I get a rental car?

A: Yes. If you were the owner and operator of your vehicle at the time of the wreck, once insurance is confirmed, we will cover the cost of a rental car, and submit the bill to the insurance company for reimbursement.

  • Q: Do you help with the property damage to my car?

A: Yes. If your vehicle is repairable, we will make sure your vehicle is repaired at a qualified body shop and the insurance company pays for all related repairs. If your vehicle is a total loss, we will evaluate the insurance company’s offer and hire an independent appraiser when necessary to make sure the offer is fair to you.

  • Q: How long will it take to settle or resolve my case?

A: Every case is different and has its own unique set of facts. Some cases are resolved in a matter of months and others, where serious injury occurs, or fault is contested may take longer. Our firm will take every step to ensure that you receive a just and speedy resolution of your claim.

  • Q: How will I pay my medical bills while my case is pending?

A: This is a question we will work with you to answer. If you have health insurance, the Balanced Billing Act requires health providers to accept your insurance, just as they would if you didn’t have a wreck related injury. We can also send letters of guarantee, which some health providers will accept and will wait for payment until your case is settled. We can also help with medical payments when appropriate. If you are concerned about how you will pay your medical bills, give Rice & Kendig a call.

  • Q: How long do I have to file an injury lawsuit?

A: Please don’t wait until the last minute, but you have up to one year from the date of your accident to file suit. Keep in mind that many important decisions need to take place in the first year of your case. In fact, many cases can be settled within the first year. The sooner you call Rice & Kendig, the sooner we can get started on your case. Other deadlines apply to other types of cases.

  • Q: Will I have to go to court?

A: The best answer is- maybe. The decision to file suit or, go to trial, is one that will be made together with you based on the facts of your case. Suit is filed in some cases when the insurance company refuses to fully pay you for all of your losses. Settlement may still be possible even after suit is filed. We are experienced trial attorneys, so if your case must go to trial, we will be ready.

  • Q: What if I can’t come to your office?

A: If you can’t come to our office, we can come to you. We also offer free telephone consultations if that is more convenient for you. If you are calling out of state, we can also use Zoom and email instead of meeting face to face. Rice & Kendig will work with you to ensure you have access to experienced representation.

  • Q: Will my insurance rates go up if I pursue a claim?

A: The law is very clear, an insurance company cannot raise your rates when you are not at fault. If you are not at fault and you make a claim for medical payments or uninsured motorist payments, the insurance company cannot raise your rates for filing a claim.
