What Our Shreveport Personal Injury Law Firm Will Do for You

At Rice & Kendig, we offer a free initial consultation on all personal injury matters. When you call, you will speak to an attorney who will answer your questions and set an appointment to meet with you personally. We work remotely as required by statewide coronavirus restrictions but also meet in person to the extent allowable, whether here in our Shreveport offices or wherever is most convenient to you. We are happy to travel to your location when you can’t come to us.

Our firm will handle every detail of your case, including setting doctors’ appointments, getting medical records and police reports, and filing your claim with the insurance company. The less you have to think about, the more you can focus on getting better. Let us focus on getting you appropriate medical care and financial compensation for your injuries; it’s what we do best.

We take personal injury cases on a contingency fee basis, meaning we only charge a fee if and when we recover compensation on your behalf. You pay nothing up front. In short, you don’t pay anything unless we make recovery for you!

You’re Not Just a Case, You’re Family

We treat every client like family and want to make sure you feel taken care of every step of the way. Some of our core values include justice, mercy, truth, and compassion. We believe these values are essential to the practice of law, and each of our attorneys exemplifies these values every day.

We have earned the respect of other attorneys and judges by actually trying cases and getting results. Our firm has the largest reported jury verdict in Louisiana for Fibromyalgia, Kessler v. Southmark Corp., No. 25,941-CA (La. App. 2 Cir. 9/21/94); 643 So.2d 345; and at the time of judgment, the largest jury verdict for wrongful death, McGrail v. Lee, No. 35,756-CA (La. App. 2 Cir. 04/03/02); 814 So.2d 729.

Other significant cases include Perkins v. McDow, Nos. 92-C-2192 and 92-C-2709 (La. 02/22/93); 615 So.2d 312, reversal of “second permittee” rule by the Louisiana Supreme Court and Haynes v. Shumake, 582 So.2d 959 (La. App. 2 Cir. 06/19/91) which required uninsured motorist carriers to conduct their own investigation, rather than requiring the insured to furnish a never-ending list of proof.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Q: How do I pay for a lawyer?

A: If you're looking for an attorney, and you're worried about how much it's going to cost or what the fees are gonna be, don't let that be a reason not to call. At Rice & Kendig we work on what's called a contingency fee. A contingency fee is a percentage of a recovery that's made on your case. So if you have a personal injury matter, whatever the value of that case is, once it's recovered, the attorney takes a percentage as their attorney fee. You don't have to pay us a dime until we win your case.

  • Q: How do I pay for medical bills?

A: If you've been in a wreck, a lot of times people are worried, "Am I going to have this big medical bill to pay for?" But if you have an attorney, they're going to make sure that that's taken care of; your family doesn't have anything to worry about. I would encourage you to call Rice & Kendig. We will take care of medical costs.

  • Q: Do I need a lawyer for my case?

A: If you've been injured as a result of somebody else's negligence, you may ask yourself, "Do I really need a lawyer for my case?" And the answer is absolutely. Remember, insurance companies hire professional claim adjusters, lawyers, sometimes you even whole teams of lawyers, and their job isn't to help you. Their job is to reduce what the insurance company has to pay, so that you are not fully compensated.

  • Q: What do I do after an accident?

A: After an accident, things are likely to be chaotic. But the first thing you need to do is check on the safety of those in your vehicle, as well as the other vehicle. You then need to begin looking for witnesses who are going to be able to support your case. Get names and addresses; don't rely upon the police to do that. Once you have done that, and you've received proper medical care, it's time to consider contacting an attorney.

  • Q: Should I negotiate or speak with an insurance adjuster before hiring an attorney?

A: No. Insurance adjusters are professionals, trained to save the insurance company money and minimize your claim. Before speaking to an insurance claim adjuster call an attorney and make sure you know your rights.  Since we offer a free consultation, you risk nothing speaking with us first.

  • Q: Can I afford to hire an attorney?

A: Yes. We handle personal injury cases are on a contingency fee basis. We are paid a percentage of the settlement or judgment at the end of the case. This means that we do not require payment until your case settles or you receive a final judgment from the court. To put it simply, you pay us nothing if we do not make recovery for you.

  • Q: How will I pay your fee and how much will it cost to have an initial consultation?

A: We offer a free initial consultation to evaluate and determine if we can help you under the facts and circumstances of your claim. We work on a contingency fee basis, which means you pay us nothing if we do not make recovery for you.

  • Q: What are the different types of insurance?

A: Liability insurance is the mandatory insurance, Underinsured or uninsured coverage if someone hits you you're covered you can also add Medical payments coverage that will cover all your medical bills.

  • Q: Will my insurance rates go up if I pursue a claim?

A: The law is very clear, an insurance company cannot raise your rates when you are not at fault. If you are not at fault and you make a claim for medical payments or uninsured motorist payments, the insurance company cannot raise your rates for filing a claim.

  • Q: What if I can’t come to your office?

A: If you can’t come to our office, we can come to you. We also offer free telephone consultations if that is more convenient for you. If you are calling out of state, we can also use Zoom and email instead of meeting face to face. Rice & Kendig will work with you to ensure you have access to experienced representation.

  • Q: Will I have to go to court?

A: The best answer is- maybe. The decision to file suit or, go to trial, is one that will be made together with you based on the facts of your case. Suit is filed in some cases when the insurance company refuses to fully pay you for all of your losses. Settlement may still be possible even after suit is filed. We are experienced trial attorneys, so if your case must go to trial, we will be ready.

  • Q: How long do I have to file an injury lawsuit?

A: Please don’t wait until the last minute, but you have up to one year from the date of your accident to file suit. Keep in mind that many important decisions need to take place in the first year of your case. In fact, many cases can be settled within the first year. The sooner you call Rice & Kendig, the sooner we can get started on your case. Other deadlines apply to other types of cases.

  • Q: How will I pay my medical bills while my case is pending?

A: This is a question we will work with you to answer. If you have health insurance, the Balanced Billing Act requires health providers to accept your insurance, just as they would if you didn’t have a wreck related injury. We can also send letters of guarantee, which some health providers will accept and will wait for payment until your case is settled. We can also help with medical payments when appropriate. If you are concerned about how you will pay your medical bills, give Rice & Kendig a call.

  • Q: How long will it take to settle or resolve my case?

A: Every case is different and has its own unique set of facts. Some cases are resolved in a matter of months and others, where serious injury occurs, or fault is contested may take longer. Our firm will take every step to ensure that you receive a just and speedy resolution of your claim.

  • Q: Do you help with the property damage to my car?

A: Yes. If your vehicle is repairable, we will make sure your vehicle is repaired at a qualified body shop and the insurance company pays for all related repairs. If your vehicle is a total loss, we will evaluate the insurance company’s offer and hire an independent appraiser when necessary to make sure the offer is fair to you.

  • Q: Can I get a rental car?

A: Yes. If you were the owner and operator of your vehicle at the time of the wreck, once insurance is confirmed, we will cover the cost of a rental car, and submit the bill to the insurance company for reimbursement.

  • Q: How much is my case worth?

A: A true estimate of your case worth cannot be determined until you have finished medical treatment or maximized your recovery. The value of your claim will be based on the following factors: Past and future medical expenses, past and future pain and suffering, mental anguish and loss of enjoyment of life, lost wages and future lost earning capacity, disfigurement, disability, loss of consortium as well as the nature, extent and duration of your injuries.  Rice & Kendig has evaluated cases for settlement and tried cases to judgment and verdict for over 30 years. We will bring that experience to the table when it comes time to evaluate your case. Our only job is to maximize your recovery.
